Squeezed onto the Yucatan Peninsula south of Mexico and east of Guatemala, this small country the size of Massachusetts has much to offer its visitors. As the host to the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere (second largest in the world), Belize offers one of the most amazing snorkeling and scuba diving experiences ever. With incredible rainforests, historical Mayan Ruins, beautiful beaches, and adventures caves, Belize is a country small in size, but huge in excitement. The following are the highlight areas of Belize.
Ambergris Caye
Ambergris Caye is a narrow 25-mile-long strip of land that is separated from Mexico in the north by the narrow Bacalar Chico channel. The Maya people dug this Channel 1,500 years ago. One half mile to the east is the Belize barrier reef, second longest barrier reef in the world, which continues some 190 miles along the length of Belize. Ambergris Caye is the most active and happening Caye; with the best dive shops, the most restaurants, the biggest selection of accommodations, and an exciting night life, the main town of San Pedro makes for a great destination.
Lamanai
Lamanai is one of Belize's largest ceremonial centers. This amazing destination is located on the banks of the 30 mile long New River Lagoon in North Central Belize. With one of the longest occupation spans in the Maya World (1500 BC until the late 16th century), Lamanai has been continuously occupied for over 3000 years. While here visit a historical museum, the remnants of two 16th century Spanish churches or a colonial sugar mill that was established in 1860. Set in tropical forests spectacular views are provided from several of its large temples, Lamanai provides a unique experience in the Maya culture and the biological diversity of a tropical forest.
San Ignacio/Cayo District
The town of San Ignacio is one of the most popular destinations in Belize. San Ignacio has a Spanish ambience and a dusty charm, with a few interesting bars and restaurants. It is also in the main city of the Cayo District. The Cayo District is a 1500 square mile district that encompasses a good portion of the Maya Mountains and has more than its fair share of ancient Maya Ruins to visit and explore. In this area, you will find Caracol Mayan Ruin, Mountain Pine Ridge, Xunantunich Mayan Ruin, Hidden Valley Falls (1,000 foot waterfall), wildlife and a variety of jungle and river lodges to suit any style, budget and adventure.
Placencia
| Placencia is sixteen miles of white sand beaches and
brilliant blue waters. This stretch of paradise includes a virgin mangrove
lagoon, jungle rivers, pristine rainforests, ancient Mayan ruins, and a
hundred ways to enjoy the coastal treasures. Placencia is heaven for the
nature lover. Spend your days diving, fishing, snorkeling, or kayaking.
Other activities may include seeing an abundance of wildlife on the Monkey
River tour, hiking the Cockscomb Jaguar Preserve, visiting the Maya ruins of
Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit, or just relaxing on the beach. Spend the nights
at the many interesting restaurants and local watering holes that feature
local food, culture, and live music.
